What exactly is “contemporary art,” and who gets to decide? This course unpacks the shifting, often contested boundaries of art in the present moment. Through case studies of groundbreaking works, movements, and exhibitions from the late 20th century to today, participants will explore how cultural, political, and technological forces shape what we call art. We will question the role of the artist, the gallery, and the audience, while engaging through active painting with themes such as identity, activism, digital media, and globalisation. By the end, you’ll not only understand the debates at the heart of contemporary art—you’ll be ready to join them.
